Achieving net zero is fundamental to the future of the economy - our response to the Skidmore Review

Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission has submitted a response to the Government’s Net Zero Strategy Review call for evidence. 

The review aims “to ensure [the Government is] delivering net zero in a way that is pro-business and pro-growth.” The Commission’s response sets out our position that achieving net zero is fundamental to the future of the economy (see downloads, below).

The Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission has written to the new Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, to request changes in national policy across six policy areas to enable faster action on the climate and ecological emergency.

Collaboration key to net zero

Working together is the only way communities, businesses and organisations in Yorkshire and Humber can make a successful transition to a low carbon future, says a leading climate scientist ahead of a panel event in Leeds.

Measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero will have an impact across society, from the way homes are heated to industrial processes, transport systems and the skills needed by workers in the new green economy.  

2022 Yorkshire Post Climate Change Summit announced

The one-day conference, at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, will be on 15 November 2022.

Four jobs being recruited in Commission’s Secretariat team

The Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission is recruiting four new posts for their Secretariat team, to help transform their action plan into real-world impact.

The Commission is an independent advisory body working with combined and local authorities and with other public, private and third sector (i.e. NGOs and community-based) organisations across the region.

Help available for groups to communicate during flood incidents

Free help is available for groups to support effective communications during flood incidents. The offer is from Yorkshire iCASP (Integrated Catchment Solutions Programme) and consists of an interactive engagement exercise that can be held virtually or in person. The offer will run until the end of the summer. The exercise is ideal as a training tool and would be useful for anyone who has a role in communicating during flooding incidents. 

Nearly 800 circular economy initiatives in Yorkshire and Humber communities

An interactive map launched at the first Yorkshire Circular Economy Festival 2022 revealed that circular economy initiatives are widespread in Yorkshire and the Humber. Community-led initiatives, such as repair cafes, food banks and libraries of stuff, play a key role in climate action while establishing more equitable and inclusive communities.

Our webinar on Wednesday 16 March 2022 with former BBC journalist David Shukman on Net Zero and Levelling Up: What could they mean for Yorkshire and Humber? was well received, with very positive feedback from the online audience.

Over 100 people registered to attend the public event, which heard from climate policy experts Michael Jacobs (University of Sheffield), Rebecca Willis (Lancaster Environment Centre) and Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission director, Andy Gouldson.

Yorkshire workers share views on green transition

Workers from across Yorkshire and Humber feel outraged about the climate crisis, but some remain optimistic that new green jobs will arrive in their local communities, according to new research.

Dr Jo Cutter and Professor Vera Trappmann from Leeds University Business School led the project on worker perceptions of climate change and the green transition, working closely with researchers from the Place-based Climate Action Network (PCAN).
